New beers. We’ve got a ton. Here’s a rundown of what to expect and what to watch for over the next few months.
Wynkoop Brewing is releasing cans of their Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout today (yes, TODAY!) in unique, 2-packs.
100 cases will be available this time around and should reach several stores in their Denver-area distribution network.
Our Mutual Friend is bottling their first offering! Stop by the Denver brewery on Friday, March 22nd at 2 PM to snag one of only 100 wax-dipped, hand-numbered 22 oz. bombers. Limited to 2 / per person.
Parker’s Hall Brewing is gearing up for their next wave of bottled releases. Their Bock, Pilsner and Saison should be hitting shelves any day now.
Denver’s River North Brewery, with the help of the Mobile Canning Unit, plans to can later this year. Keep an eye out for their White and Hoppy Red to hit the metal soon.
Great Divide’s working on their 19th Anniversary Ale, which is scheduled to be released in April.
The annual release is a wood-aged IPA, brewed with birch syrup and aged on birch wood. The Anniversary Party will be at the Denver brewery this June.
New Belgium and Trinity have teamed up to brew a Berliner Weisse.
Not sure when this barrel aged beauty will debut, but with two funk masters behind it, I can’t wait.
Trinity’s also looking to release Elektrick Cukumbahh.
The world of Cucumber saisons and ales are growing on me and I’m looking forward to trying this one. Elektrick Cukumbahh is made with English Cucumbers, Grains of Paradise and fermented with Saison and Brett yeasts.
New Belgium’s working on several new Lips of Faith releases. The first is named after the Pluot, a wacky little fruit that’s a hybrid of the plum and apricot.
I like both and what’s even better, is that it’s fermented with a strain of wild Belgian yeast. Sounds delish!
Another New Belgium collaboration is underway with Utah’s Red Rock Brewery called Paardebloem. This odd little brew will feature peach juice, grains of paradise, dandelion greens and will be wood-aged with wild Belgian yeast.
If that’s not strange enough for you, New Belgium’s also got Rolle Bolle coming out this Summer, which is brewed with monk fruit and soursop. I don’t know where they find these crazy ingredients, but I’m hoping they make for a good beer.
Odell has a pair of new brews set to release this spring. One’s a low ABV session ale, while the other is an Imperial Peach IPA.
Kansas City’s Boulevard teamed up with The Roasterie to brew up a Coffee Ale, set to be released later this month.
Dogfish Head will release 61 Minute IPA into their distribution network towards the end of March. This is their 60 Minute IPA brewed with Syrah grape must.
Stone’s bringing back their Enjoy By IPA. This time it’s Enjoy By 04.20.13.
Apparently a much larger batch was made since we last received this beer in 2012. This was a really great IPA, that rivals the best of ’em, so look out hop heads.
Speaking of Stone, last month they collaborated with Two Brothers and Aleman, out of IL, to create Dayman Coffee IPA.
Citrus hops meets deep-roasted coffee in this 8.7% ABV, 42 IBU one-off. Look for bombers and kegs to start dropping on March 18th.

Some of the last kegs of this year’s Pliny the Younger release are getting tapped tonight.

The Inaugural SUDS for SIDS Brew Fest is at Mile High Station in downtown Denver, CO.
The event will raise money for Angel Eyes, which helps families cope with the sudden, unexpected death of an infant or toddler. As the father of two, this is a very scary topic and one that isn’t recognized enough. Parent or not, it’s a great cause. The $40 ticket will allow you the opportunity to try a variety of beers, sample food from local restaurants and meet dancers from the Broncos and Nuggets. Beer geeks can look for brews from more than a dozen breweries including Elevation, River North, Strange and Oskar Blues. Mile High Station is located at: 2027 W Lower Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80204.
Last night, Renegade and Wit’s End tapped their collaboration beer, called Judge Whoppner. It’s an Imperial Brown Ale brewed with malted milk. The initial 10 gallon batch is on tap at Renegade right now. A second batch is set to be brewed soon over at Wit’s End for their tasting room. Aurora’s Cedar Creek Pub is a bit of a hidden gem out in. Today, they’ll tap a keg of The Bruery’s Sour in the Rye. It’s brewed with around 40% rye malt, then transferred to oak barrels where the sour yeast and bacteria work their magic. This is a tasty, complex, moderately funky, seasonal brew from California’s The Bruery.
I still need to make a trip to visit Cedar Creek Pub, but their beer tappings have just gotten better and better over the past few months and the food menu looks great too. Stop by and give them a try. Cedar Creek Pub is located at: 2100 N Ursula St, Aurora, CO 80045. 303-537-4124.
Up in Arvada, Yak & Yeti’s Head Brewer Adam Draeger, tapped a Toasted Coconut Porter yesterday and the (Yakety Yak) Don’t Talk Bock is getting rave reviews. Here’s this week’s lineup.
Draeger also said he brewed a large batch of a Belgian Dubbel that will be ready sometime towards the end of March. The beer will be called “Brahmin Dubbel Knowledge” and features 25 pounds of homemade Belgian Candi Sugar. Yak & Yeti is located at: 7803 Ralston Rd, Arvada, CO 80002. 303-431-9000.
Crooked Stave has your sour fix. They just tapped Sentience aged in a Leopold Bros Small Batch Whiskey Barrel. This won’t last, so get to the barrel room today. It’ll also be pouring at Strong Ale Fest, so you’ve got a couple of chances to try this amazing beer.

Down at Rockyard Brewing, Jellyman’s got a 15% ABV Eis’d Bier de Garde, called King Baudoin.

As for us, we’ll be at the 11th Annual Strong Ale Festival at Avery Brewing in Boulder. You know how much we love the Avery Fests and this one is no exception. This is THE place to be this weekend if you crave those big ass, roided up, 8+% ABV, monster brews. I’ll be scoping out Russian River’s Pliny the Younger, Avery’s Tweak (coffee infused Mephistopheles) and whatever the hell Surly brings this year. Maybe a little of your new barrel-aged Brett beer, Pentagram? Yeah, that works. And bring back Darkness you foolio’s!

Some of Colorado’s lady brewers brewed a collaboration beer at Wynkoop earlier this week. They joined forces to brew a Belgian Pale Ale that’ll debut during Colorado Craft Beer Week in March. Boulder’s Fate Brewing has been staying busy. Business is good at the new brewpub and the brewhouse is almost completely installed. Sales & Marketing Director Hannah Lloyd says they should be “brewing test batches by this weekend…fingers crossed”.

Beer Hunters, take note that Firestone Walker’s §ucaba, a barrel-aged Barleywine and Stone’s Old Guardian Barleywine are making the rounds right now. Stone also released an Oak-Smoked version of Old Guardian as part of their “Odd Beers for Odd Years” line of beers. I can’t speak for the new Oak-Smoked, but the others are great both fresh and aged. Get ’em while you can.
Utah’s Epic Brewing is opening a brewery, barrel room and tasting room right here in Denver. They’re just getting started over there, but plenty of exciting things are coming.

2012. What a year! Certainly a HUGE year for beer! With more than two dozen breweries opening in Colorado this year, there were plenty of new and interesting brews that were introduced into our market. It’s not easy for a beer geek to keep up with everything…
We did our best to try them all and my liver hates me for it. But have no fear, all this “research” has good purpose. There was no way we could have tried everything out there, but here’s some of our personal favorites from 2012. While I didn’t take availability into account, we did have a few rules that each beer had to meet: 1. available in either bottles or cans. 2. a new release in 2012. 3. made right here in Colorado.
Without further ado, here’s our list of favorite beers, breweries and beer bars from the past year.
10. Odell Brewing – The Meddler
Big woody notes combine with tart cherries and plums to round out this complex Flanders Oud Bruin. Such a tasty style that seems to be making a bit of a comeback. Odell has been rolling out great sours since the emergence of Friek last year and this is a great addition to their already impressive lineup.
9. Oskar Blues Brewery – Deviant Dale’s IPA
Not only did Oskar Blues give us an IPA this year, but they put it in those big ass 16 oz. cans! Who do I need to thank for this great gift? Plenty of grapefruit, caramel, pine and citrus hops galore. Best addition to the OB family since TEN Fidy.
8. Prost Brewing – Hefeweizen
We all knew Bill Eye was an amazing brewer, but I don’t think any of us knew German lagers could be sooo damn tasty. I love the entire Prost lineup, but the Hefeweizen is pretty special. Fruity, flavorful, refreshing and light enough to make it a sessionable beer. In addition to being on tap at a variety of restaurants and bars, look for growlers of this tasty brew at liquor stores throughout the Denver area. Delish!
7. New Belgium – Lips of Faith Tart Lychee
A three-year old wild ale was mixed with lychee fruit and cinnamon to create a unique combination for New Belgium’s summertime Lips of Faith release. It turned out to be the perfect “lighter” sour brew for the warm summer months. I liked it so much, I greedily snagged a keg for myself. I hope they keep this tasty offering in regular rotation.
6. Trinity Brewing – Oh Face Saison Provisional
I credit my wife, Mrs. Insane, with finding this one. While I was filling my cup with Trinity’s phenomenal sours during GABF, she was discovering Oh Face. This is another beer in their “Office Space” series, which also includes TPS Report and the upcoming Red Swingline Stapler. Oh Face is a sensory adventure with plenty of Bretty funk, fruit, cardamom, pepper, coriander, yeast and more. Another complex masterpiece from our favorite brewery down in the Springs.
5. Funkwerks – Deceit
The 2012 Small Brewery of the Year just seems to get better and better. Deceit is a classic Belgian-style Tripel with flavors of tropical fruit, spices and hops. Look for more interesting one-off’s and seasonals to come out of this Fort Collins brewery in 2013.
4. AC Golden Brewing – Hidden Barrel Apricot
Low production numbers, a high price tag and no distribution for AC Golden’s first bottled release. Yet, it still managed to tie up phone lines with orders and sold out on the same day it hit store shelves. And for good reason. It’s full of sour apricot, barnyard funk and oak. Hopefully we’ll continue to see more interesting bottles and expanded distribution from AC Golden in 2013.
3. Elevation Beer Co. – Apis IV
Elevation’s first bottled release was a delicious, complex Belgian-style Quadrupel, that was much more authentic Belgian than American knockoff. Although Elevation may or may not brew this beer again, they’re clearly on the right track and I’m looking forward to more greatness from them in the years to come. Awesome beer.
2. Avery Brewing – Uncle Jacob’s Stout
This 17% ABV Imperial Stout, debuted in April as the 2nd release in Avery’s Annual Barrel Series. Bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, oak and booze make up this sticky, sweet stout. Look for another batch to be released sometime in 2013. Be sure you don’t miss out!
I could have easily picked 5 beers from Crooked Stave to make this list. They’re just that good. But for me, Persica was the standout and my pick for best Colorado Beer of 2012. Unfortunately, the only way to try this one was by being a member of Crooked Stave’s 2012 Cellar Reserve, having a generous friend who’s in the Cellar Reserve or were lucky enough to snag a sample at Avery’s Sour Fest. Ripe peaches and oak mix for this fruity, sour gem. It’s a shame only a few hundred bottles were made, but the good news is that it’ll be making a return in 2013 to members of the Cellar Reserve. It’s not too late to sign up, so don’t miss out.
Best Colorado Breweries of 2012
1. Avery Brewing – Not only do they offer a solid lineup of year round beers, but their seasonals and occasional Barrel-Aged releases are second to none. The Barrel-Aged series has become so popular, that the releases have turned into mini-festivals at the brewery, where Avery taps unique and hard-to-find beers just for the occasion. Combine their great beers with their annual Anniversary Party, Sour Fest, IPA Fest and Strong Ale Fest and the new brewery which is expected to open in 2014, and it’s easy to see why Avery Brewing is our favorite brewery of 2012.
2. Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project – Wild Wild Brett Indigo, L’Brett D’Or, Nightmare on Brett, Persica and they even managed to bring Cantillon’s Zwanze Day to Colorado. Phenomenal job all around!
3. Odell Brewing – They make some of our favorite CO beers including Friek, Myrcenary and Bourbon Barrel Stout. I could sit in their tasting room all day, play a little cornhole or just watch the world go by on the patio. Thank you Odell for another great year of events, tappings and bottled releases.
Best Denver Area Beer Bars of 2012
1. Parry’s Pizza – Epic tap takeovers, pint nights, great food and a friendly and knowledgable staff made Parry’s our favorite place to sip a pint outside of a brewery in 2012. Three locations around the Denver area, with more on the way!
2. The Rackhouse Pub – Aside from great beer, great food and multiple beer events throughout the year, The Rackhouse shares the roof with Stranahan’s Whiskey. Stop by for a tasting and tour of the distillery, stick around for a bite to eat and a locally brewed craft beer.
3. Falling Rock Tap House – The classic Denver tap house. They get the good stuff the for the geeks and always seem to have something special on draft.
Three Colorado Breweries to Watch in 2013
2. Dry Dock Brewing – A new production facility, new brewhouse, a 63-BBL foeder, canning line and expanded distribution. I’m in!
3. Black Shirt Brewing – I’ve admittedly only tried 3 of BSB’s brews, but if that’s any indication of what’s to come, Denver’s in for a treat in 2013.

Over in Highlands Ranch, Parry’s Pizza is gearing up for their End of the World Party on Friday.
They’ll be pouring Doomsday-inspired brews along with firkins from Oskar Blues and Odell. Stop by for a very cool “Last Supper” influenced menu and songs about the end of the world. I’m interested to see how far they went with their playlist. I came up with a list of tunes that hint at the end of the world and there are quite a few out there. I mean R.E.M.’s cute and all, but there are some really good ones that aren’t so obvious, ranging from Nine Inch Nails to Medeski, Martin & Wood. Put your zombie costume on and grab some Little Death Ride. They’ve got 1 and ONLY 1 keg that’ll be getting tapped at 5 PM. They’ll also have 750 mL bottles available. New Belgium’s got a new Lips of Faith in the works.
Cascara Quad is a Belgian-style Quad brewed with date sugar and blended with the fruit that surrounds coffee beans (called cascara). No release date yet.

As we head into the winter months, breweries from all over are busy releasing a ton of great beers to keep you warm through those colder months. Trying to keep up with all the new releases these days is no easy task. So, as winter begins to settle into Colorado, here’s a rundown of some of the new beers that I’m excited about.
The Bruery, Black Tuesday
Let me start by saying that this year’s Black Tuesday is on Tuesday, October 30th. As in TOMORROW! So if you’re not a member of The Bruery’s Reserve Society, tomorrow is your one and only chance to secure a bottle. The beer is a 19.2% ABV Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout that has notes of vanilla, oak, sherry, dark fruits and chocolate. Black Tuesday is truly an amazing beer and definitely something everyone should try at least once. Boston Beer Company, Samuel Adams Utopias 10th Anniversary
To say this beer is big, is an understatement. Released every other year, this guy typically clocks in at 25%-30% ABV. This batch is a special release to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the beer. It’s made with a blend of beers that were aged in Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels, Port casks and Rum barrels. Sam Adams used a bit of their original Triple Bock in the blend, which is 19 years old!
This is a monster of a beer that drinks more like a Cognac or Sherry than a beer. Be prepared to shell out $160-$180 for a single bottle of this complex, cellarable brew. 15,000 bottles were produced and our share is hitting local store shelves right now.
Stone Brewing, 12.12.12 Vertical Epic
The very last release in the Vertical Epic (VE) series. In case you haven’t heard, Stone’s VE is a yearly release that began on 02.02.02, followed up a year, a month and a day later with 03.03.03, and so and so, all the way up to the final release on 12.12.12. The idea was for beer connoisseurs to purchase a bottle (or three) each year and save them for a monstrously big tasting and opening all of the beers to sample side-by-side on 12.12.12. Each beer has been a different recipe and brewed with cellaring in mind. While beer geeks have stashed away many, many bottles of VE releases over the years, the earlier bottles can be very tough to track down. The 02.02.02 has sold for hundreds of dollars per 220z. bottle on the secondary market.
This year’s 12.12.12 is described as a Belgian-style Abbey Ale, brewed with cinnamon, ginger, allspice, orange peel, clove and rose hips. I’ve managed to cellar away bottles going back to 03.03.03 and I’m really looking forward to opening them up for a special tasting in December. Whether or not you’ve been collecting the VE series, this sounds like a tasty brew that will hit our market just before Christmas.
Trinity Brewing / Black Fox Brewing Collaboration, Le Petite Morte Trajet aka Little Death Ride
The name of this collaboration brew is a reference to the upcoming end of the Mayan calendar in December of this year. Trinity owner Jason Yesterday and Black Fox owner John Schneider developed the recipe together using all Mayan cuisine. Corn, wild cinnamon, beans, squashes, peppers, cacao nibs and more come together in this unique, red Saison. The beer was brewed at Trinity on October 8th, bottled on October 24th and will be tapped at the brewery on December 21st, which is the last day of the Mayan calendar, also believed by some to be the end of the world. No matter what your beliefs, plan on this being a good beer. These guys without a doubt, know how to make a great Saison. Look for a few kegs to hit better beer bars and 750mL bottles to be released in December.
Upslope Brewing, Christmas Ale
This is a Belgian-style ale, that was brewed with a special mix of spices created by Upslope brewer Alex Violette. Look for coriander, brown sugar and juniper berries in this one. I was really impressed by their Pumpkin Ale and look forward to this new holiday seasonal. It was canned last week in 16oz. candy cane striped cans and will be released on November 1st.
Firestone Walker Brewing Co., XVI Anniversary
This barrel-aged blend is always a highlight of the winter months. For this year’s Anniversary Ale, Firestone Walker has blended 8 different barrel-aged brews to create the 13% ABV, XVI blend. 42% of the beer is Stout consisting of Bourbon Velvet Merkin (Oatmeal Stout), Bourbon Parabola (Russian Imperial Stout) and Tequila PNC (Buckwheat Stout). The remaining mixture comes from a variety of Barleywines, Strong Ales and IPA’s. I’ve been trading for these beers for a number of years and have always been impressed by these releases. Fortunately, Firestone Walker started distributing to Colorado last year and this should be hitting our shelves sometime in November.
New Belgium Brewing, Imperial Coffee Chocolate Stout
This upcoming addition to the Lips of Faith series is a bit of a deviation from their usual Belgian-style and Sour Ales. For winter, they’ll be releasing a 10% ABV Imperial Stout, brewed with locally roasted coffee beans and chocolate. This hit the Fort Collins market this past weekend, so keep your eyes open for it.
Odell Brewing Co., Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout
Similar to the New Belgium brew above, Odell has similar plans for the winter with their upcoming Chocolate Milk Stout. This one clocks in at 8.5% ABV and is brewed with lactose and milk chocolate. The label describes it as “rich and creamy” and is compared to “a cold glass of chocolate milk”. Sounds yummy. Odell’s planning to release it in 4-packs in early-January 2013.
Ska Brewing, Vinifera Stout
This is part of Ska’s new series of canned stouts, with a new beer getting released every quarter. The 2nd release, Vinifera Stout, is an Oak-aged, Foreign-Style Stout, brewed with Malbec grapes. These beers are released on the Solstice or Equinox, depending on the time of year. Look for Vinifera to get released on December 21st, which is the Southern Solstice, and also the last day of the Mayan calendar. Fingers crossed we’re still around to try this beer.
Keep your eyes out for some great beers hitting your local liquor store over the next few weeks. Winter is truly my favorite time of year for seasonal beers, with so many big, thick and flavorful beers to be on the lookout for. What are you excited for this winter? Good luck beer hunters!
Pumpkin Beers Round 2! Last time, we discussed some awesome Pumpkin Ales and Lagers from around the U.S. This time, we’re going to talk Pumpkin Beers that are brewed right here in Colorado! Whether they come in bottles, cans or growlers, there’s a variety of great tasting gourds waiting for you. Take a look.
Tommyknocker Brewery, Small Patch Pumpkin Harvest Ale. The Idaho Springs brewery first released their Small Batch Pumpkin Harvest Ale in 2011. This 5% ABV beer retails for $7.99/ 6-pack. The beer poured a very dark, ruby red color with a 1-finger, off-white head. The aroma was malt, dark fruit and molasses. Where’s the pumpkin? The taste was cherry, raisins, burnt wood and molasses. I was a little confused by this one as I found very little pumpkin anywhere in the beer. It seemed one-dimensional and was fairly disappointing. Score: 2.5/5
Note: My review is based on Tommyknocker’s bottled version. I had it on-tap at the brewery in Idaho Springs two weeks ago and found it to be a whole lot better. It’s possible I got a bad bottle.
Dry Dock Brewing, Half Moon Pumpkin Ale. The ’09 Small Brewery of the Year released this beauty last week and I was able to make it over for the release party. This 5.2% ABV beauty pours a clear, dark orange color, with a 1-finger, off-white head. Big pumpkin spice dominates the aroma, along with some notes of cinnamon and brown sugar. The taste was pumpkin pie spices, brown sugar, molasses and a touch of vanilla. This is a very spicy, flavorful brew. Very enjoyable. Hey homebrewers, The Brew Hut (homebrew shop) next door will set you up with the recipe so you can brew your own batch. I brewed a batch about 6 years ago and it’s a great recipe. Score: 3.75/5
Upslope Brewing, Pumpkin Ale. The Boulder brewery took home a Gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2011 with this special beer. The 7.7% ABV brew pours a clear, copper color with a half-finger, off-white head. Soft carbonation and faint lacing trim the glass. Pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and malt round out the aroma, while the flavor is pumpkin pie, graham cracker, brown sugar and a touch of hops. A touch of alcohol and the slightest hop bite in the finish. Very nice beer.
In addition to sporadic tappings at the brewery, 16oz. cans have been distributed to multiple stores along the Front Range. You can purchase a 4-pack from the brewery for $15, which also includes a coupon for a free pumpkin from Munson Farms in Boulder. Baby Bear Pumpkins from Munson Farms were used in the making of this wonderful beer. Score: 4.5/5
Avery Brewing, Rumpkin. Wow. There are pumpkin beers and there are PUMPKIN BEERS! This is a monster of a pumpkin beer, clocking in at 15.9% ABV! That’s right, 15.9%! Avery released this amazing concoction for the first time in bottles last year and most stores were sold out within hours. This brew was barrel-aged in rum barrels and sold for $10 / 12oz. bottle. I’m reviewing the inaugural 2011 batch, since the 2012 batch is yet to be released.
This monster pours a hazy, dark amber color, with a 1-finger tan head. Amazingly sweet notes of rum, brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, raisins and booze. Smells more along the lines of an Old Ale or aged-Barleywine than a Pumpkin Ale. The taste, ooooohhhhhh, the taste… Sooo sweet and smooth. Vanilla, rum, raisins, dark fruit, cinnamon, caramelized brown sugar and a slight hint of pumpkin. This is a truly amazing beer and completely different to anything else I’ve tasted while going on this little journey through the land of Pumpkin Beers. It’s clear that some of the pumpkin flavors have faded since the ’11 release, but that’s part of the beauty of aging beers. Over time, the layers slowly blend together, harsh flavors mellow out and time can turn sharp notes into smooth ones. Score: 4.75/5
This is a very special beer and is more along the lines of Avery’s “The Beast” than a standard Pumpkin Ale. I picture The Beast chowing down in a pumpkin patch. If you’re looking to grab a bottle from this year’s batch, you had better make plans to visit the brewery on Saturday, September 29th. Word on the street from Avery’s Barrel Herder, Andy Parker, is that he had trouble tracking down rum barrels and production is lower than last year. I’ve also heard that there will be no distribution for the 2012 batch. In other words, get your butt to the brewery on the 29th if you want a bottle. 12oz. bottles will run $10/each, with a 12-bottle limit. It seems like there’s 826 beer related events going down on the 29th, but I’m going to give it the old “college try” to make it up to Boulder for this. Hope to see you there!
“But wait, there’s more!”
Keep your eyes out for a variety of other Pumpkin brews that are in various stages of fermentation at your favorite local brewery. Strange Brewing in Denver is working on a Pumpkin Porter. Look for it to get tapped sometime around October 8th.
TRVE Brewing, also in Denver, was cooking their gourds earlier this week. Owner / Brewer Nick Nunns is naming TRVE’s Pumpkin Ale, “Carving Out The Eyes Of Gourd”. He’s brewed the beer with 8 different varieties of roasted heirloom gourds and expects it to be in the 8% – 10% ABV range. Nick’s planning to spice it up later with vadouvan, which is a French-influenced curry blend. I’m excited to try his creative take on the style.
Down in Colorado Springs, Bristol Brewing was picking perfect pumpkins earlier this week for their amazing Venetucci Ale. This is a very nice beer that can only be purchased at the brewery (guaranteed to sell out!) and proceeds go to charity.
Also down South in the Springs, Trinity Brewing has brewed several batches of this year’s Emma’s Pumpkin Saison. This is always an impressive beer that can be found on tap at the brewery and in 750mL bottles.
This list is by no means complete, but it’s certainly a great starting point for you to get your gourd on this season. Grab a pint at your favorite brewery or get a growler to-go. Many of these won’t last more than a few weeks, while some will be gone in a matter of hours, so get out and enjoy them while you can. This past week has been a wild one. At work, my company dedicated an airplane to our great state.
I was on-hand to take part in the festivities and see the aircraft up close.
My work had their yearly “Spirit Party”, which bounces to a different city every year. This year it was held in Denver and we took over Coors Field for the evening. Gotta love working for a company that had a special beer brewed just for the event.
We also had a chance this week to visit Brandon Proff over at Our Mutual Friend Malt & Brew.
This is a new brewery getting set to open in Denver in September. Brandon met with us to talk about his project, his beers and show us around his place. I’m putting together a post that will give you all the details on Our Mutual Friend, so stay tuned.
As if that wasn’t enough, we caught up with Bill Eye over at Prost Brewing for a Preview Party at Prost Brewing.

The boys from the Colorado Craft Beer Show will be broadcasting live from Arvada Beer on Saturday. Arvada Beer recently tapped a Double IPA and Scottish Ale and should be getting ready to tap a Coffee Porter made with tasty beans from the local artisan bean roasters at Corvus Coffee. Sounds awesome!
They’ll also be talking to Right Coast Pizza about their Grand Opening and mini-Beer Fest this weekend.
If you can’t make it to Arvada Beer, be sure to tune into the Colorado Craft Beer Show on AM760 from noon – 2 PM to get all the latest beer news around town. This year’s Annual Foam Fest is going down on Saturday from 6 – 10 PM at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo.

Man, there’s another ton of great beers headed to our shelves. Check these out!
Dry Dock is gearing up for the opening of their 2nd location and adding a canning line. Here’s a sneak peek at their Amber and Hefeweizen cans. I’m hoping for an early winter release on these.
Twisted Pine released another addition to their Artisan Ale series over the weekend. On Saturday, they debuted their Wagon Wheel Stout. This big and rich stout was aged for 12 months in Buffalo Trace barrels with fresh, organic cherries.
Remaining bottles will be hitting local shelves shortly.
Trinity Brewing has another yummy Saison headed to bottles.
Le Capataine Petite Bouddha Saison Regal is aged in Chardonnay barrels with cacao and fermented with Brett and Lactobacillus. A 10.4% ABV Saison? Sounds like funky goodness to me.
Elevation Brewing is also getting ready to release a Chardonnay barrel-aged beer this Summer. Look for Signal de Botrange, which is a 7.5% ABV, Barrel-Aged Farmhouse Ale.
This will be Elevation’s first barrel aged release in bottles and is part of their Double Black Diamond, upper-end series of beers. They just signed a deal with Elite Distribution to bring 8 different beers to the Front Range throughout the year. Keep an eye out for these beginning August 10th.
The Beast is back!
This year’s batch of Beast Grand Cru was recent released at Avery Brewing on August 1st. This was the 10th release of this monstrous brew and it ages extremely well. Grab one fresh, but grab a few to stash away for the next decade or for the upcoming zombie apocalypse. Look for a 14%-18% ABV on this bad boy, so be nice or it’ll bite!
Dad & Dude’s Breweria has teamed up with Prost Brewing to bring you their Dank IPA in cans.
There was a huge release party at Dad & Dude’s Breweria on August 4th. This 6.5% ABV IPA should be on any hop heads radar. Look for 16oz. cans hitting the CO market shortly.
From our out-of-state friends, look for Stone Brewing to release their 16th Anniversary beer in the next few weeks. This year is a 9.4% ABV, lemon-tinged Double IPA.
They’re also gearing up to release “Enjoy By 09.21.12 IPA”. This is an 8.5% ABV IPA that is a hoppy, citrusy, bitter brew. Just like the label says, drink it fresh and live for the now!
I always enjoy Stone and these look to be a pair of great summer releases. Both will be making their debut at the Stone Anniversary Party in Escondido, CA on August 18th, 2012. Plan on bombers hitting local shelves soon after.
Over in Deschutes country, keep an eye out for The Dissident sour brown ale.
This 11.4% ABV brown ale is brewed with cherries and aged in French oak wine barrels. Don’t let the “brown ale” trick you… This is Flanders Oud Bruin. It’s sour, fruity and complex. Grab one if you see it as they won’t last long!
A little further down the road is The Abyss.
This is typically a November / December release, so I might be getting a bit ahead of myself, but I can’t help it. This is an absolute favorite of mine! The Abyss is a blend of beers aged in Bourbon barrels, Oak barrels and Wine barrels. This 11.0% ABV Imperial Stout has notes of licorice, chocolate, molasses, caramel, coffee and more. So complex and yummy, this also ages exceptionally well. My earliest bottles will be turning 5 this year. Might be about time for a nice, big vertical tasting. An amazing beer, but save me some will ya?
In my last bit of news, I’m a little sad to announce that Head Brewer Tod Mott has left The Portsmouth Brewery in Portsmouth, NH. Tod has been leading New Hampshire’s amazing brewpub for more than 8 years and has really helped to put them on the map, particularly with Kate the Great, his decadent Russian Imperial Stout. There’s an entire day devoted to the release of this beer. At one point, Kate the Great was considered to be the best beer on the planet!
Patti and I have visited The Portsmouth Brewery several times over the years and they never disappoint. Tod will be replaced by Tyler Jones, who has served as Tod’s assistant for the past four years.
As for Tod, last week he announced that he will be opening a new brewery somewhere in Southern Maine. While no further details have been released, he plans to brew about 500 barrels a year and will be releasing Kate the Great at his new brewery. He mentioned that the name will be change, since it’s owned by Portsmouth Brewery, but he owns the recipe and plans to release it under a new name in the future. I wish him the best of luck.
The house is quiet. The kids are in bed, Patti’s makin’ the big bucks at work and I’m sitting out back on the deck. My cat watches me through the screen door in total jealousy. I’m not sure if he’s jealous of the fact that I’m outside or if he’s just eyeing up the IPA I’m sipping on, but either way, he’s not happy with me. At any rate, I’m loving this weather and I’m a little bummed that another weekend is drawing to a close. Did you get out and enjoy it? We sure did.
We hit the Copper Kettle 1-year Anniversary Party on both Friday and Saturday. It gave us a chance to try some of their special releases like the Belgian Golden Strong, Belgian Black Quad and American Barleywine, among others. If you missed it, you need to kick yourself… hard. It was a great, 4-day long celebration, with different beer releases each day, along with food trucks and live music on-site. I’m not sure if they staff got any sleep over the weekend or not, but they were having fun and kept things running smoothly.
Gary V was there broadcasting his American Craft Beer Radio program on Saturday morning. He had Jeremy Gobien and Kristin Kozik from Copper Kettle on the show, along with Bill Eye talking about the upcoming opening of Prost Brewing, Firkin Master Walt Chleva from Dry Dock and Tim Myers from Strange Brewing. Great show and thanks Gary for the shout out!
After the past weekend, I’m really digging Copper Kettle and their great beers. I’ll be stopping by more and more to try their different releases and get growlers to go. Congrats on a great first year guys!
We also hit up the Avery Tap Takeover out at Parry’s Pizza in Highlands Ranch, CO. This was an awesome event, featuring 21 Avery beers on tap, plus a handful in bottles. They brought some heavy hitters for this event, including ’11 Beast Grand Cru, Tweak, Uncle Jacob’s Stout and a ton more. Very, very impressed with the lineup. The standout for me was the Boulder Weiss. A (not over the top) German sour, that was served with a touch of either cherry or peach. The peach was delish!
They also had Avery giveaways every hour throughout the day. We couldn’t resist the food. Dude, their food is seriously good. We got a pizza that was dripping with tasty meat. It couldn’t have been better. Really good food, great beer. If you haven’t been yet, move Parry’s to the top of your list. Stay tuned for more Tap Takeovers in the coming weeks.
Alright, so you get the idea, the weekend rocked. Hope you were able to get away from the yard work and enjoy it at some point.
Got plenty of new beers on the way to keep your beer hunting skills finely tuned. First up is Stone Ruination. Seems the gargoyle has been working out and has pumped up from 7.7% ABV to 10% ABV for his birthday. Come on now, who doesn’t like Stone? This classic Double IPA should be pretty easy to track down, so keep an eye out for it in upcoming weeks.
For the sour beer and funk lovers out there, Chad Yakobson up at Crooked Stave has bottled his Petite Sour. You might recognize the name from last year’s Pure Guava Petite Sour release, but this is a completely different beer. It’s being described as a “tart, farmhouse, table beer”. I know last year’s Pure Guava had a, well, uhm, interesting (?) aroma when it was released, that wasn’t necessarily well received by the funksters. Settle down people, Chad knows his beer. If you like wild yeast, sours and funky things, this should be on your radar. Oh, and pick up two if you can. One for now and one to try in a year or two, after the yeast has really gone to town and worked its’ magic.
While we’re laying down the funk, Jason Yester down at Trinity Brewing in Colorado Springs just got label approval for his upcoming Oh Face Saison. Another tribute to the movie Office Space, this was brewed with pumpkin, lavender and spices and fermented with Brettanomyces. He’s putting that new brew system to good use. They don’t call him Saison Man for nothing. Jason is a master at what he does and this will definitely warrant a trip to the brewery to pick up a bottle or three.
Right about now you might be thinking, damn man, can’t you just tell me about a good beer that I can go to the store and buy today! Sorry, I just get excited about all the new beers coming our way. But yes, you’re right. There are plenty of new, tasty beers that have found their way to your local shelves in the last week that you can easily track down and enjoy right now.
How about Firestone Walker’s Wookey Jack. This is the latest release in their Reserve Series and is listed as a Black Rye IPA. Wookey Jack is double dry-hopped with Citra and Amarillo hops, which should give a big grapefruit or citrusy aroma. It’s unfiltered and I’m guessing the rye will make it pretty easy drinking. At only $5.99 / 22-oz bomber, it’s worth trying.
Quick teaser, FW fans, Parabola will be back in mid-May. I believe this will be the third batch. More details as I get ’em, but if you like imperial stouts, this is a winner. Stay tuned.
One more beer that’s out and about now is Avery’s Uncle Jacob’s Stout. I know, I know, I’ve mentioned this beer about 6 times in the last two weeks, but it’s THAT good. Plus, I know you’re going to be really mad at yourself when all the other little Colorado beer nerds have bought them up and you missed out. Yep, it’s $10.00 / 12-oz bottle. I get it, it’s expensive, but it’s also 17% ABV. Split a bottle with someone and put on a long movie. You’re evening is set. It’s a nice, nice beer that is very drinkable right now and will continue to evolve and change over time. Avery plans to release this beer again next year, so start building your vertical now. Pick up some today. It’s still around at a few places, but won’t be there for long. If you don’t grab one, I don’t want to hear any whining later. Just sayin’.

Who was downtown for the Rockies Opening Day yesterday? Maybe I should ask, who wasn’t downtown for Opening Day yesterday? The weather was perfect again this year and baseball fans were out soaking it up. It was a great day and good to see so many friends out and about.
Our group met up at Mellow Mushroom to try the 18th Anniversary Wood Aged Double IPA from Great Divide. Before long, we moved over to Falling Rock Tap House. Odell had their tap truck and a tent set up out front. I got treated to a glass of Myrcenary Double IPA and a new hat from the good people out there. They were rockin’, but the beer was flowing and everybody was enjoying themselves.
We eventually made our way inside Coors Field and I tried the Farmhouse Red at Sandlot Brewery. It’s a Farmhouse meets Flanders Red ale, brewed with white pepper, coriander and hibiscus. Pretty tame, but that’s to be expected for Coors Field I guess. Still, really enjoyable on a warm day and a nice departure from the norm. I’m not sure if this is a one-and-done deal or if they plan to keep it available all season, but give it a try on your next visit.
After watching the Rockies get embarrassed by the Giants, we made our way over to Star Bar. We had some friends playing in the Kentucky Street Parlor Pickers and they suggested we stop by. Great music, mixed with a New Belgium promotion and good beer. Not to be missed! Denver really needs to make Opening Day a state holiday and let people take the day off from work. It shouldn’t be missed.
So there’s plenty more new beers getting ready to roll out for Spring and Summer. Dry Dock in Aurora, CO, is busy bottling their upcoming seasonal, Apricot Blonde. Bottles will be going on sale at the brewery on April 16th and will be making their way to Colorado liquor stores soon after.
Over at Avery, in Boulder, CO, they’ve got a Belgian-Style Triple in the works called Nineteen. This will be released in time for their upcoming 19th anniversary later this summer. The 8.2% ABV Tripel will be widely distributed and should be hitting stores soon. Stay tuned for more details on their big anniversary party in August.
Up in Fort Collins, CO, Odell plans to release this years batch of St. Lupulin Extra Pale Ale on April 21, 2012. A party is scheduled at the brewery with music, food, games and of course, plenty of beer. St. Lupulin is a 6.5%, hoppy, refreshing summer-time ale, and will be sold throughout their ten state distribution area.
So where will you be this weekend? I know it’s only Tuesday, but it’s never too early to start making plans. Patti and I will be heading up to Breckenridge, CO for their 6th annual Spring Beer Festival. The festival is on Saturday, April 14th, from noon-5PM and will feature 25 craft breweries. Local favorites like Odell and Left Hand will be pouring, along with several breweries from out-of-state, including Stone and Deschutes. Tickets and details can be found HERE. There’s also a new brewery opening it’s doors to the public for the first time this weekend. Echo Brewing, in Frederick, CO, will have their Grand Opening on Saturday, April 14th at 2PM. This weekend they will be pouring a Kolsch, IPA, Brown and ESB. Oskar Blues will have a food truck on-site from 3-6PM. More information can be found on the Echo Brewing website and Facebook page. Oh, and don’t forget about the 4th Annual Saison and Farmhouse Ale Festival down at Trinity in Colorado Springs, CO. I hear there are still a handful of tickets left. Show your AHA membership card and get $5 off your ticket. This event is scheduled for Saturday, April 14th from 11AM-4PM. I’ve never been, but it’s definitely on my radar for next year.
