Weekend Beer Buzz: Strong Ale Fest & Birthday Edition 02/28/2013

Cold, snowy week here my friends.  The “Redneck Ruler” has been working overtime, trying to keep up with the foot of snow we got this week.

topper

Our team of “experts” flew in for a few days to revamp the website.  Those slackers got a good start, but we’re not ready to relaunch just yet.  It’s coming…

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

Some of the last kegs of this year’s Pliny the Younger release are getting tapped tonight.

younger

Freshcraft will begin handing out tickets at 5:30 PM, with the tapping scheduled for 6 PM.  6 oz. pours will sell for $7.  Freshcraft is located at: 1530 Blake St, Denver, CO 80202.  303-758-9608.

Over at The Cheeky Monk, they’ll tap their last keg at 6:30 PM.  $10 / glass.  The Cheeky Monk is located at: 534 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80203.  303-861-0347.

The Inaugural SUDS for SIDS Brew Fest is at Mile High Station in downtown Denver, CO.

sids

The event will raise money for Angel Eyes, which helps families cope with the sudden, unexpected death of an infant or toddler.  As the father of two, this is a very scary topic and one that isn’t recognized enough.  Parent or not, it’s a great cause.  The $40 ticket will allow you the opportunity to try a variety of beers, sample food from local restaurants and meet dancers from the Broncos and Nuggets.  Beer geeks can look for brews from more than a dozen breweries including Elevation, River North, Strange and Oskar Blues.  Mile High Station is located at: 2027 W Lower Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80204.

Last night, Renegade and Wit’s End tapped their collaboration beer, called Judge Whoppner.  It’s an Imperial Brown Ale brewed with malted milk.  The initial 10 gallon batch is on tap at Renegade right now.  A second batch is set to be brewed soon over at Wit’s End for their tasting room.  Shikes has all the details in his recent Westword article.  In the meantime, head over to Renegade and give it a try.  Renegade Brewing is located at: 925 W 9th Ave, Denver, CO 80204.  720-401-4089.

Aurora’s Cedar Creek Pub is a bit of a hidden gem out in.  Today, they’ll tap a keg of The Bruery’s Sour in the Rye.  It’s brewed with around 40% rye malt, then transferred to oak barrels where the sour yeast and bacteria work their magic.  This is a tasty, complex, moderately funky, seasonal brew from California’s The Bruery.

cedar creek

I still need to make a trip to visit Cedar Creek Pub, but their beer tappings have just gotten better and better over the past few months and the food menu looks great too.  Stop by and give them a try.  Cedar Creek Pub is located at: 2100 N Ursula St, Aurora, CO 80045.  303-537-4124.

Up in Arvada, Yak & Yeti’s Head Brewer Adam Draeger, tapped a Toasted Coconut Porter yesterday and the (Yakety Yak) Don’t Talk Bock is getting rave reviews.  Here’s this week’s lineup.

beerlist 2013-2-27 (2)

Draeger also said he brewed a large batch of a Belgian Dubbel that will be ready sometime towards the end of March.  The beer will be called “Brahmin Dubbel Knowledge” and features 25 pounds of homemade Belgian Candi Sugar.  Yak & Yeti is located at: 7803 Ralston Rd, Arvada, CO 80002.  303-431-9000.

Crooked Stave has your sour fix.  They just tapped Sentience aged in a Leopold Bros Small Batch Whiskey Barrel.  This won’t last, so get to the barrel room today.  It’ll also be pouring at Strong Ale Fest, so you’ve got a couple of chances to try this amazing beer.

Dry Dock’s Firkin Friday release will be a Citrus Saison.

Tapping at 3 PM.  Dry Dock Brewing is located at: 15120 E Hampden Ave, Aurora, CO 80014.  303-400-5606.

Down at Rockyard Brewing, Jellyman’s got a 15% ABV Eis’d Bier de Garde, called King Baudoin.

This Deviation is described as a “malt forward and chewy ale” that will “warm you like a thick down coat”.  Perfect for the cold, snowy days we’ve experienced lately.  This behemoth will tap at 4 PM. Rockyard Brewing is located at: 880 W Castleton Rd, Castle Rock, CO 80109. 303-814-9273.

As for us, we’ll be at the 11th Annual Strong Ale Festival at Avery Brewing in Boulder.  You know how much we love the Avery Fests and this one is no exception.  This is THE place to be this weekend if you crave those big ass, roided up, 8+% ABV, monster brews.  I’ll be scoping out Russian River’s Pliny the Younger, Avery’s Tweak (coffee infused Mephistopheles) and whatever the hell Surly brings this year.  Maybe a little of your new barrel-aged Brett beer, Pentagram?  Yeah, that works.  And bring back Darkness you foolio’s!

strong ale

Strong Ale Fest sold out quick, so if you don’t already have tickets, well, you’re probably out of luck.  However, if you do have tickets, look for us Friday night.  The event continues on Saturday and features a live broadcast with the guys from the Colorado Craft Beer Show and American Craft Beer Radio.  More details below.  And if you just want to re-live last year’s fest and gaze over the menu, click HERE.  Avery Brewing is located at: 5763 Arapahoe Ave, Boulder, CO 80303.

Other Exciting Brew News

Some of Colorado’s lady brewers brewed a collaboration beer at Wynkoop earlier this week.  They joined forces to brew a Belgian Pale Ale that’ll debut during Colorado Craft Beer Week in March. Boulder’s Fate Brewing has been staying busy.  Business is good at the new brewpub and the brewhouse is almost completely installed.  Sales & Marketing Director Hannah Lloyd says they should be “brewing test batches by this weekend…fingers crossed”.

Beer Hunters, take note that Firestone Walker’s §ucaba, a barrel-aged Barleywine and Stone’s Old Guardian Barleywine are making the rounds right now.  Stone also released an Oak-Smoked version of Old Guardian as part of their “Odd Beers for Odd Years” line of beers.  I can’t speak for the new Oak-Smoked, but the others are great both fresh and aged.  Get ’em while you can.

Utah’s Epic Brewing is opening a brewery, barrel room and tasting room right here in Denver. They’re just getting started over there, but plenty of exciting things are coming.

As always, we’ll keep you posted with updates.  An April opening is expected.

Happy Birthday to us!

Brewtally Insane (that’s us) turns 1 this week!  Just wanted to say Thank You to all of our readers, brewers and amazing people who have supported us since we fired up this little site last year.  We really, really, really appreciate it.  I started this just as a way to keep some friends in the loop with all the local beer happenings and it’s taken off from there.  So Thank You!  Look for us at SUDS for SIDS at Mile High Station tomorrow and Strong Ale Fest at Avery Brewing on Friday. Say “hi”, have fun, be safe.

You guys rock!  Craft beer rules!

Other Brew News

Just a few bits of brew news to close out this week’s beer buzz.  Jim Koch over at Samuel Adams announced they’ll begin canning this summer.

sam cans

Once upon a time, all the way back in 2004, Koch said “Beer shall be offered in bottles, not cans”. My how times have changed.  No worries.  I love cans and don’t mind seeing Sam Adams get in on the action.

A little closer to home, Odell has announced Tree Shaker Imperial Peach IPA.

tree shaker

Pinch me, because I must be dreaming.  Brewed with 2,000 lbs of pureed Colorado peaches, this is sure to be magical, wish granting unicorns in a bottle.  No word on a release date yet, but you know we’ll keep you posted on when you can expect 750 mL bottles to hit the shelves.

Colorado’s lady brewers are collaborating on a special brew to be released during Colorado Craft Beer Week in March.  Over at the Westword, Jonathan Shikes has all the details in his article about the Belgian Pale Ale they’ll be brewing up next week at the Wynkoop.

Lastly, Bill Eye’s here with his weekly terminology lesson.

We’ll be working on a little makeover and doing some maintenance on the site this weekend.  I want to apologize in advance for any outages we might experience.  Our team of skilled experts are working hard to make improvements and fine tune a few things just for you.  (It’s also a great excuse to gather some friends and open some nice brews.)

Otherwise, that’s it for this round.  Have fun this weekend you little Younger freaks.

Cheers!

Weekend Beer Buzz 01/24/2013

The weekend’s nearly here.  Big weekend of beer, combined with a beautiful forecast.

The Kool-Aid Man always knows the right words to say.  Chicks dig the big guy too.

Oh, before we get started, Mile High Wine & Spirits deserves a HUGE shout out for bringing De Dolle Stille Nacht back to Colorado.  Yep, the bestest ever xmas beer made a return appearance in our great state last week.

616234_488441644532812_375365946_o

I don’t know how Andre does it, but he does.  Keep on, keeping on my friend.  The Reserva lasted about 11.3 seconds, so don’t waste your time calling to get a bottle.  I don’t know if he’s got any Stille Nacht left.  He shouldn’t.  If I had made it over, he wouldn’t.  But either way, I applaud Andre and his beer department for continuing to track down the very best offerings from around the globe. If you haven’t checked them out yet, make it a priority.  They care about bringing the very best beers to Colorado.  Mile High Wine & Spirits is located at: 435 S Vance St, Lakewood, CO 80226. 303-936-0272.

Right Now

Crooked Stave has a killer menu every week and they’re at it again with this great lineup.

Dry Dock Brewing is located at: 15120 E Hampden Ave, Aurora, CO 80014.  303-400-5606.

Jellyman’s got “The Honey Bird” lined up for this week’s Deviation.

This is a 6% ABV filtered American Wheat Braggot.  Look for a mead and malt nose, nicely balanced flavor and big time drinkability.  Tapping at 4 PM.  When it’s gone, it’s gone, so leave work a little early and get on over for this one.  Rockyard Brewing is located at: 880 W Castleton Rd, Castle Rock, CO 80109. 303-814-9273.

As for us, we’ll be attending the Winter Brew Fest at Mile High Station on Friday.

It sold out earlier this week, but I hope to see some familiar faces in attendance.  More than 40 breweries will be pouring including Elevation, Firestone Walker, Oskar Blues and Stone.  Doors open at 6 PM for VIP and 7 PM for GA.  Mile High Station is located at: 2027 W Lower Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80204.

Saturday, January 26th, 2013

Saturday is stupid.  It’s too big for its’ own good.  Saturday is so bad, it should be in detention.

Over at Falling Rock Tap House, the King’s cleaning out his cellar.

frth

Owner Chris Black has been digging deep to share some of his cellared treasures with Denver beer geeks and he was kind enough to give us an exclusive sneak peek into what’ll be available.  You want this?  Are you ready?  Me too, but first, a few points I was asked to keep in mind:

– Quantities are LIMITED!  Falling Rock will have a tally board to keep track of what’s available, but when it’s gone, it’s gone.  No cry babies, so get there early if you see something you MUST have.

– Beer must be consumed on-site.  Sorry, but that’s standard CO law.  No growlers, no takeaways, no flasks and no crazy camelbacks to sneak out your beloved beer.  Bring a friend, a wife, a girlfriend, your friend’s girlfriend, your friend’s boyfriend, an enemy, an enemy’s friend or whoever to imbibe with…  Open, share, enjoy, repeat.

– Prices weren’t given to me, but I was told beers “will be at a much lower price than they would be offered at the bar any other time”.

The list below is only about 1/2 of the 60+ different beers that will be available on Saturday.  You’ll have to come by on Saturday to see the full list, but here’s what we know so far:

They’ll be pouring everything from Apricot Blonde to Hop Abomination.  (Side note – you ever mix the Apricot with the Hop Abomination?  The Dry Dock staff calls it a Hopricot.  I call it splendidly delish!  Try it.)  Brewery reps will be on hand at both locations to answer your questions and give away some great Dry Dock merchandise.  The takeover runs from 11 AM – 10 PM.  Parry’s Pizza is located at: 9567 S University Blvd, Highlands Ranch, CO 80126 and 5650 Allen Way, Castle Rock 80106.

Weekend Beer Buzz 10/25/2012

It looks like Mother Nature has dished out a bit of snow and cold weather to us.  Don’t fret, there’s still plenty of good beer to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside again. It’s time for the weekend people.  You ready?

Fire it up right now, by making a trip over to Crooked Stave.  Just look at this lineup.

Not only are there amazing brews on draft, but they’ve got both Oculus and the GABF-medal winning Sentience in bottles to go.  Don’t forget to sign up for Crooked Stave’s Cellar Reserve while you’re at it.  You won’t regret it.  Crooked Stave is located at: 1441 W 46th Ave, Unit 19, Denver, CO 80211.

Over at the Yak & Yeti is their Oaked IPA.  This is their Himalayan IPA aged in a Leopold Bros. Rye Whiskey Barrel.  Brewer Adam Draeger teased this recently on our behind the scenes tour of the brewery and I’d love to taste how this turned out.

They’re also pouring Blueberry Tart, which is a slightly tart, blueberry brown ale and a Milk Stout, which will only be pouring for the colder months.  Stay tuned for a series of Porters that will head into territories never before visited by previous Porters.  More details in the coming weeks.  Check out Yak & Yeti at: 7803 Ralston Rd, Arvada, CO 80002 and 8665 N Sheridan Blvd, Westminster, CO 80003.

Friday, October, 26th, 2012.

So the Jellyman down at Rockyard is up to his usually playfulness again this week.  This time, he’s releasing “Wonder Twin Powers…Activate!”  Best beer name I’ve heard in a long time.  He’s taken an IPA and filled it with antioxidant goodness from the very special and tasty Açaí berry.  Well, lots of Açaí berries actually.

Guaranteed to be way better than a flu shot, stop by at 4 PM to get your fix.  Rockyard Brewing is located at: 880 W Castleton Rd, Castle Rock, CO 80109.  303-814-9273.  And for you kids still wondering who the hell the Wonder Twins are, get learned.

This may or may not be from the original cartoon series.  You be the judge.

Before this post goes any further South, let’s just move on.

Oskar Blues Homemade Liquids & Solids is turning 3!  Stop by on Friday for this family friendly event, complete with balloon making and face painting for the little ones.

Good beer?  Are you kidding me?  These guys kill it in the beer category and will have a ton of great brews flowing.  The food menu is tough to beat too.  Man, I wish I could make this.  It’ll be an awesome time.  Oskar Blues Homemade Liquids & Solids is located at: 1555 S Hover St, Longmont, CO 80501.  303-485-9400.

Parry’s Pizza is hosting Beer & Fear on Friday.

Scary Costumes meets Scary Beer.  Get all ghouled up and stop by for some spooky brews from Jolly Pumpkin, Lost Abbey and Shmaltz.  Costume contest from 7 PM – 8 PM.  Parry’s Pizza is located at: 9567 S. University Blvd., Highlands Ranch, CO 80126.

Dry Dock is ready for another round of Firkin Friday.  This week’s release is their Double IPA, dry-hopped with Simcoe and Amarillo hops.  Hop-heads arise!  Tappings at 3 PM and 7 PM.

Dry Dock Brewing is located at: 15120 E Hampden Ave, Aurora, CO 80014.  303-400-5606.

Saturday, October 27th, 2012.

Saturday is a solid day of beer happenings, so let’s refocus and get serious.

The Rackhouse Pub is turning 3 this weekend!  To celebrate their 3rd Anniversary, they’ll be hosting a Dry Dock Tap Takeover.

Yeah, they’ve got your Hop Abomination, GABF Gold-medal winning Apricot, Vanilla Porter and so on, but they’ll also be pouring Dry Dock’s World Beer Cup medal winning Wee Heavy, Coffee Milk Stout, Bligh’s Barleywine (yes, Bligh’s Barleywine), The Ambassador Sour (my fav!) and even a firkin of Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Porter.  More than 20 beers will be making an appearance for this amazing event.

Do NOT miss this!  I mean it.  Aside from maybe your buddy’s beer cellar, when’s the last time you saw a bottle of Bligh’s Barleywine?  Head over to the Rackhouse and help them celebrate 3 years. There’s even a costume contest and live music later in the evening.  The Rackhouse is located at: 208 S Kalamath St, Denver, CO 80223.

Arvada Beer is also celebrating an Anniversary this weekend.

For their 1-year anniversary, they’ve been tapping great beers all week-long.  Here’s the complete list of what they’ve got planned:

  • 10/21 – Bourbon Barrel Aged Cherry Wit
  • 10/22 – Both White House Ales
  • 10/23 – Nitro Russian Imperial Stout
  • 10/24 – Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Aged Belgian IPA
  • 10/25 – Russian Imperial Stout
  • 10/26 – Batch 100 Wheat Wine
  • 10/27 – Syrah Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout

There’s some amazing beers on the list for sure!  Stop by on Saturday for a Halloween costume contest, a chance to win free beer for a year! and to check out a live broadcast with the boys from the Colorado Craft Beer Show.

Turk and the Gubna will be broadcasting live from noon – 2 PM on AM 760.  Tune in or stop by to get all the latest Colorado craft beer news.  Arvada Beer is located at: 5600 Olde Wadsworth Blvd, Arvada, CO 80002.  303-467-2337.

Parry’s Pizza is inviting you out to drink beer for a good great cause on Saturday.

They’re hosting a silent auction to help raise money for little Zoe, who is battling cancer.  Stop by for a beer, a bite to eat and bid on some great merchandise for an amazing cause.  Parry’s Pizza has three locations at: 9567 S. University Blvd., Highlands Ranch, CO 80126.  12501 E. Lincoln, Englewood, CO 80112.  5650 Allen Way, Castle Rock, CO 80108.

Black Shirt Brewing’s gearing up for another party on Saturday.  While they still don’t have any permanent hours established just yet, they’ll be pouring a variety of Red Ales from 3 – 8 PM.

Stop by for a sneak-peek and try some beers from Denver’s newest brewery.  Black Shirt Brewing is located at: 3719 Walnut St, Denver, CO 80205.

This last one is for all the über beer geeks and beer traders out there.  Darkness Day at Surly Brewing in Brooklyn Center, MN is going down on Saturday!  Darkness is an amazing, amazing, amazing Imperial Stout that is delicious fresh, but also ages incredibly well.  I also think it’s kind of cool that Surly chooses a different monster / zombie / scary creature to adorn their bottle every year.

Darkness Day only happens once a year, so show up early to secure up to 6-bottles of this limited, yummy brew.  Cash only.  I’ve got a vertical running back to ’08 and if anybody happens to have an extra bottle and can grab me this year’s workshirt, you’ll be rewarded with, well, more beer. Duh! E-mail me (brewtallyinsane@yahoo.com) if you’ve got a bottle that you just need to get rid of and we’ll figure out the details.

Again, Darkness is a pretty special brew that you should go out of your way to find.  Seriously great beer.  It’s good too.  Grab your bottles, stick around for the beer (obviously!), food trucks and metal music.  It’s going to be a blast!  Surly Brewing is located at: 4811 Dusharme Dr, Brooklyn Center, MN 55429.

That’s about it y’all.  Plenty to do both near and far, far and near, amazing things are brewing everywhere.  (Sorry, my kids are all about Dr. Seuss these days.)  Get on it and have some fun this weekend.

Cheers!

Weekend Beer Buzz 09/27/2012

So I’ve got nothing for you on Thursday…  Sad, I know.  So why not take a ride over to Boulder for a visit to the new West Flanders Brewing Co. on Pearl Street Mall?

I had the chance to sample all of their beers, along with some items on the food menu on their opening day last week and I was really impressed.  They’re already off to a great start with their menu and 6 tasty beers: Angry Monk, St. Mark’s Dubbel, Daisy Cutter Belgian Strong, Canniption Pale Ale, TBD ESB and Third Kingdom IPA.  Look for a full post about West Flanders Brewing next week, but in the meantime, stop by for a visit.  They’re located at: 1125 Pearl St, Boulder, CO 80302. 303-447-2739.

LATE ADDITION:  Crooked Stave Barrel Cellar is pouring beers again today!  After some confusion surrounding appropriate licenses for pouring beers in the tap room, the funkiest brewery in Denver is officially back open and ready to pour their tasty blends again.

This is awesome news and I’m glad owner / brewer Chad Yakobson was able to get things cleared up so quickly.  Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project is open Wed – Sat from noon – 7 PM and is located at: 1441 W 46th Ave, Unit 19, Denver, CO 80211.

Wow, Saturday’s big.  HUGE!!!

Where to begin, where to begin….

Well, first up, Congrats are in order for Scott Witsoe over at Wit’s End Brewing, as they’ll be celebrating their 1-year Anniversary on Saturday.

Stop in from noon – 8 PM on Saturday and raise a glass to Scott and his awesome nano-brewery. They make some great beers and deserve your support.  Marco’s Coal-Fired Pizza will be on-site to fill your tummy.  Wit’s End Brewing is located at: 2505 W 2nd Ave, Unit 13, Denver, CO 80219.  303-459-4379.

Speaking of anniversaries, Boulder Beer is having their 33rd Anniversary Party on Saturday.  That’s incredible!  Congrats guys!

They’re hosting a Beer Rave at the brewery from 2 – 6 PM.  Tickets are $30 and include a tasting glass, beer, music and food from Jimmy John’s.  Look for 12 small batch beers from Boulder Beer, plus a variety of beers from more than 30 guest breweries.  This is going to be a great afternoon! Oktoberfest!  I already mentioned Prost, who’ll be continuing their German shenanigans throughout the weekend.  Go see them.  You’re not a certified Beer Geek until you’ve visited Prost.  Just sayin’…

On the other side of town, Dry Dock is gearing up for Docktoberfest.  This is a GREAT event and rumored to be their busiest and mostest funnest day of the year.  Pardon my terrible grammar, but it’s an awesome time.

The doors open at 11AM, Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan will be tapping the first keg of Oktoberfest at 11:15 and from then on, mayhem and madness will ensue.  Music will be provided by The Rhinelanders and their mighty Alpenhorn.  There’s just something irresistible about accordion music and that huge horn from the Ricola commercials.  Food will be on-site from Helga’s, the best freakin’ German food in town and the staff will be sporting their sharpest German duds.  Mrs. Brewtally Insane will be pourin’, I’ll be drinkin’, it’ll be glorious.  Come by and say hi.  Dry Dock Brewing is located at: 15120 E Hampden Ave, Aurora, CO 80014.  303-400-5606.

Up north in Loveland, Grimm Brothers will also be hosting their Oktoberfest on Saturday.  This will be your first chance to buy a few bottles of Farmer’s Daughter, their Oktoberfest Lager.

This family friendly event will also feature live music, food, games, contests and limited edition steins for sale.  Grimm Brothers Brewhouse is located at: 623 N Denver Ave, Loveland, CO 80537. 970-624-6045.

I spent some time last week plowing through some tasty Pumpkin Beers and shared my findings in two posts breaking down what’s out there and what’s coming our way.  Click THIS and THAT to catch up.  Which brings us to RUMPKIN!

Avery’s releasing their 2nd batch of Rumpkin on Saturday at 5PM!  This is a glorious, amazingly, tasty, delectable, glorious…  Wait, I already said that….  Damn, it’s good.  And it’s big!  Like The Beast Grand Cru ate a pumpkin patch.  Avery’s resident barrel herder Andy Parker said he had trouble getting enough rum barrels this year, so expect lower production numbers and little-to-no distribution.  If you want some, get your pumpkin lovin’ butt to Avery Brewing on Saturday for this release.

I’ll be there, muling beers back for my fellow geeks that can’t make it.  If you’re lucky enough to attend, Avery always treats their guests to some awesome, small-batch, barrel-aged deliciousness. Just between you and me, I’ve heard Tweak (aka Coffee Meph, aka Meph Addict aka delicious, big stout Mephistopheles brewed with coffee) and Ross’s Mom (blended Red Sour Ale).  There’s plenty more that will be pouring and remember, that’s just between you and me.  OK?

So go up there, get your Rumpkin bottles and you’ll be sitting pretty with your loot.  This high ABV brew is sure to age well for years to come.  Avery Brewing is located at: 5763 Arapahoe Ave, Boulder, CO 80303.  P.S. $10 / 12oz. bottle, 12 bottle limit, CASH ONLY!

Black Shirt Brewing is hosting another sneak-peek-teaser event on Saturday.

Black Shirt, you’re killing me!  I want to come by, but not sure I’ll be back in time.  I’ve even got 4 of those swanky Offero glasses longing to be filled with your beer.  On Saturday, they’ll be open from 5 – 8 PM and pouring their wet-hopped Red Ale, brewed with locally harvested Centennial and Williamette Hops from Voss Farms in Arvada.  I heard good things about last week’s sneak-peek. Me wants some!  Black Shirt Brewing is located at: 3719 Walnut St, Denver, CO 80205.

Don’t forget our friends on the radio.

The Colorado Craft Beer Show will be live at Arvada Beer.

The show will be live from noon – 2PM on AM 760.  They’ll be joined by Hops & Pie owner Drew Watson (also celebrating their 1-year Anniversary) and will be giving away another pair of tickets to GABF!  You won’t want to miss this.  It’s a great time to visit Arvada Beer, as they’ll be tapping their Pumpkin Ale on Friday, which was brewed with 45 lbs of pumpkins, 1 gallon of vanilla and 5 lbs of spices.  Nom, nom, nom!  Arvada Beer is located at: 5600 Olde Wadsworth Blvd, Arvada, CO 80002. 303-467-2337.

American Craft Beer Radio host Gary V., will be joined by Dustin Lemoine from Avery Brewing on 102.3 FM at noon.  Chris Black from Falling Rock Tap House should be making an appearance and I’ll be there as well to talk about the upcoming Denver Beer Week and all of the Great American Beer Festival events planned around town.

We’ll also be talking about Avery’s Rumpkin release, discussing homebrewing topics with Duane Taylor from The Brew Hut and more.  So grab your calendar and tune in at noon to 102.3 FM to make your plans for the next few weeks.

Sunday, September 30th, 2012

So I hear Falling Rock got their paws on a few bottles of Toronado 25.  Yeah, read that again and just absorb it for a minute.  Close your eyes and go to your happy place.  You read it correctly, Toronado 25!  Toronado 25 is an epic blend from Russian River Brewing, that was made to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the famous San Francisco Beer Bar, Toronado.

Not sure on the price, but, no matter, you won’t want to miss out when bottles make their appearance at 2PM.  I still remember my first (and last…) sip of the incredible 20th Anniversary Blend.  Amazing, complex, once in a lifetime kind of beer.  Here’s the 25th blend:

4% Sonambic (barrel aged for 15 months)
16% Blonde Ale (barrel aged for 8 months)
36% Strong Pale Ale (barrel aged 12 months)
28% Ale Aged with Currants (barrel aged for 8 months)
12% Strong Dark Ale (barrel aged for 12 months)
4% Baltic Porter (barrel aged for 10 months)

Get some on Sunday so I don’t have to wipe away your tears when it’s gone.  Falling Rock Tap House is located at: 1919 Blake St, Denver, CO 80202.  303-293-8338.

Before I wrap up, I just wanted to congratulate Wild Woods Brewery in Boulder.  They opened for the first time on Tuesday, 9/25 with 6 beers: Wildflower Pale Ale, Treeline India Pale Ale, Campfire Red Ale, Ponderosa Porter, Smores Stout and Berry Wheat Patch.

Stop by and check them out on your next visit to Boulder.  They’re located at: 5460 Conestoga Ct, Boulder, CO 80301.  303-484-1465.

I think that’s it.  Man, I hope that’s it.  Saturday is absolutely ridonkulious.  If you can’t find a beer event to attend this weekend, I guess you don’t like beer.  Anybody else notice that we have the potential for 4 Anniversary parties on the same weekend next year?  Boulder Beer will be 34, Wit’s end will be 2, West Flanders will be 1 and Wild Woods will be 1.  Aaah, that makes me happy.

Have fun this weekend, be responsible and be nice.

Cheers!

Brewery Spotlight: Yak & Yeti Restaurant and Brewery, Arvada, CO

A few weeks ago, I found myself in the corner “Stammtisch” (aka the Regulars) table over at Prost Brewing, sharing a few beers with some brewers and beer lovers from around town.

Among them was Adam Draeger, the head brewer over at Yak & Yeti Restaurant and Brewery. After meeting Adam and talking about his brewery, I knew it was time to get over there and try his beers.

So, after swapping a few e-mails, I finally made the trip over to visit Adam at Yak & Yeti Restaurant & Brewpub in Arvada.  My first line of business was to get my monkeys fed.  The kids had just gotten out of school and were “starving”.  Yak & Yeti specializes in cuisine from Nepal, India and Tibet. They’ve got a full menu, but we couldn’t decide on just one thing, so we went with the lunch buffet.

For just under $10, the all you can eat lunch buffet, offers pretty much everything, from soup and salad, to entrees and desert.  I took full advantage of the buffet by creating my own sampler.  I gotta say, it was good.  Damn good.  My wife, who hasn’t had the opportunity to enjoy good, quality Indian food in nearly 10 years, could be heard whispering sweet nothings to herself.  I remember the term “Heavenly” coming up over and over again.

The food’s delish and kid approved.  During the lunch buffet, kids 6 and under eat free with a paying adult, which is tough to beat.   There’s a scan of their To-Go Menu at the bottom of this post.

I like a good meal as much as the next guy, but I arrived at the Yak & Yeti primarily in search of good beer.  I ordered a pint of the Himalayan IPA, which took a Gold Medal in the 2010 Great American Beer Festival.  Hoppy, bitter and highly drinkable.  Just how I like my IPA’s.  It was the perfect complement to my spicy plate of Curry Chicken and Tandoori Chicken.  Patti headed for the opposite end of the spectrum, by ordering a Watermelon Wheat.  The mouth-watering aroma and refreshing fruit flavor made for a tasty combination.  We were off to a great start.

After wrapping up our lunch, I caught up with Adam to get the full tour of the restaurant and brewery.  The original Yak & Yeti Restaurant opened in Westminster back in 2001.  In 2007, a second location in Arvada was added, in what was previously the “Cheshire Cat Brewpub”.  The Arvada location is housed in a Victorian home that was built way back in 1864.  It’s a beautiful place that features a large bar area and surrounding rooms that have been converted into dining areas for guests.

So many old buildings have a story to tell and the Yak & Yeti is no exception.  The building has a warm and inviting feel about it, despite the fact that employees believe it to be haunted.  Cora Van Voorhis, a former resident, fell down a flight of stairs to her death and it’s believed that her spirit still remains in the house.  Many of the employees at Yak & Yeti have had experiences with Cora, from getting pushed to hearing footsteps when all else in the restaurant is quiet.

I love a good ghost story, spooks, goblins and all that, but who’s thirsty?  On to the beer!  Adam walked us through his brew system, which is a 7 BBL setup that was pieced together from former dairy equipment.

The wort is pumped into a series of 14 BBL fermentation tanks located in the basement.  As we headed down the stairs towards the fermentation tanks, the sunlight faded away and suddenly I found myself in a cool, damp, almost cave-like environment.  I can take the ghost stories and I don’t mind hanging out in the basement during the day time, but I’m not so sure how I’d feel down there, by myself at night.  Still, I’m strangely pulled in and could see myself enjoying a beer or two down there, completely oblivious to the outside world.

Adam has an office in the chilly, stone basement that looks like it could belong to a mad scientist. His desk is covered with unique ingredients he’s chosen for upcoming brew days, along with tools and replacement parts for pieces of the brewery.  On the wall hangs his diploma from the well-respected, Siebel Institute of Technology, a Brewing University in Illinois.

Behind his office lies a wall of grains and other common brewing ingredients.  Further down the hall is a chilled room, lined with serving tanks and kegs, with tap lines heading upstairs to the bar above.

Adam’s also got a storage room with a full line of hand-made tap handles, brew supplies, a beer fridge and a Leopold Bros. Rye Whiskey Barrel that is currently filled with Himalayan IPA.

Eventually, we left the basement and headed back up two flights of stairs to the upper dining room area.  The upstairs is a series of rooms with extra seating for guests on busy nights.  The old house continued to grow on me as I noticed each room had a very different feel to it.  One room is a library, while another has an intimate theater set up inside.

After the tour, Adam led me back to the bar and walked me through his complete lineup of beers.

We began with the Victorian Sunrise Wheat.  It’s a 4.5% ABV German Wheat beer that gets used quite a bit for Adam’s experiments.  He’s had an ongoing project this summer called “Wheat Wednesday”, where he infused different ingredients into his base wheat beer.  My wife had the Watermelon, which was the most recent offering.  He’s also infused it with Hatch Chili’s, Cherries, Colorado Peaches and a variety of other fun ingredients.

Here’s the full beer menu from our visit:

Victorian Sunrise Wheat – Hefeweizen

Watermelon Wheat – part of Adam’s ongoing “Wheat Wednesday” series

Namaste Pilsner – Pilsner

AbominAle Mild – English Mild

Gluten Free Apple Ale – Fruit Beer

LoonyToon Tripel – Belgian Tripel, brewed with yeast from Canada’s Unibroue Brewery

Jalapeno Lena – Chili Beer

Chai Milk Stout – spicy, complex Milk Stout

Fenugreek Belgian – fenugreek is an ingredient used in Indian food.  Adam made a small batch of this Belgian-style ale as part of his rotating “Haunted Series”.

Himalayan IPA – India Pale Ale

West Coast Glutton DIPA – Big, west coast Double IPA

There was also a soda tap that he reserves for his Lemon Honey Ginger soda.  It was really good too!

I was thoroughly impressed with Adam’s lineup of beers.  He’s got a passion for the craft that really shines through his expansive lineup of styles.  I really appreciate Adam’s playfulness and willingness to experiment with ingredients and recipes.

The solid beer lineup, combined with the tasty menu and one of a kind atmosphere make Yak & Yeti a must-visit for beer geeks.  But, it’s also a place you’ll feel comfortable bringing the whole family for a nice night out and a filling meal.  Stop by and say “Hi” to Adam and the rest of the friendly Yak & Yeti team. Oh, and keep your eye out for the spirit of Cora while you’re there.

The actual brewery is located in Arvada, but you can dine and enjoy their lineup of beers at either location: 7803 Ralston Rd, Arvada, CO 80002 and 8665 N Sheridan Blvd, Westminster, CO 80003.

Cheers!

Weekend Beer Buzz 09/07/2012

Got a big one this week.  No time for small talk.  Climb aboard.

Now.

Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project opened their taproom this week.  You want the funk?  Chad’s got it.  I hit up the big opening day this past Wednesday to check it out.  I expected Awesome and they delivered.  More details can be found HERE.

But wait, there’s more!  I couldn’t get enough, so I went back for a second visit on Thursday afternoon.  Things had quieted down a bit since the big opening day and Chad was gracious enough to give me a tour of his new Barrel Cellar and share a look into what he has planned for Crooked Stave.  Expect a full blog with a ton of pics to go up in the next few days.  In the meantime, stop by and check out his new stomping grounds at: 1441 W 46th Ave. Unit 19, Denver, CO 80211.

Friday, September 7, 2012.

Jellyman’s got a “Mysterious” cask conditioned, wild yeast fermented, rum barrel-aged, smoked ale for this week’s Deviation release down at the Rockyard.  Mysterious might be a bit of an understatement, but as usual, I’m intrigued.

Rockyard Brewing is located at: 880 W Castleton Rd, Castle Rock, CO 80109.  303-814-9273.

Over at the Dock, they’re bringing back the Toasted Coconut Porter for Firkin Friday.

My wife’s allergic to coconuts, but still can’t turn this beer down.  Break out the Benadryl and head over for the release at 3 PM.  Dry Dock Brewing is located at: 15120 E Hampden Ave, Aurora, CO 80014.  303-400-5606.

I’m happy to announce that Yak & Yeti in Arvada has been added to our list of supporters.  I spent an afternoon this week with Head Brewer Adam Draeger getting the full tour and plenty of samplers. He’s brewing up some tasty treats over there.

This Friday at 4 PM, he’s releasing a Brown Rice and Honey Ale, brewed with 60 lbs of clover honey and 60 lbs of brown rice.  He also still has a bit of his 8.2% LoonyToon Tripel, brewed with a strain of yeast from Unibroue and if you’re lucky, maybe he’ll still be pouring his refreshing Watermelon Wheat.  Today was my first visit to his brewery, but it won’t be my last.  Yak & Yeti is located at: 7803 Ralston Rd, Arvada, CO 80002.  303-431-9000.

Brew At The Zoo is back at the Denver Zoo for its’ 15th year.  This year, more than 40 breweries will be pouring including Copper Kettle Brewing Company, Great Divide Brewing, Strange Brewing and River North Brewery.

The $70 price tag not only gets you beer, but food from a variety of great restaurants from Euclid Hall to Vine Street Pub.  Proceeds go to charity.  Tickets information and more details can be found HERE.

So we’ve got an IPA Festival scheduled for Saturday, which is also Sour Beer Day!  That’s right, Saturday is Sour Beer Day!  Hmmmm….  I like it.  All hail beer!  God Bless Sour Beers.  Maybe I’ll raise a glass when I get home from the IPA Fest.  I could use a good reason to pop some Cantillon, Cascade, Crooked Stave or some other great sour beer brought to us by the letter “C”.

Odell Brewing is embracing the spirit of Sour Beer Day by releasing The Meddler, a barrel aged Oud Bruin ale.

This beauty was aged for more than 18 months with Lactobacillus and Brettanomyces yeasts. Looking forward to tracking some bottles down.  Keep your eyes peeled peeps!  750mL bottles will be released in the tap room at 4 PM.  Odell Brewing is located at: 800 E Lincoln Ave, Fort Collins, CO 80524.  970-498-9070.

There’s a new brewery opening their doors today!  (I love typing that line).  Gravity Brewing in Louisville, CO is having their Grand Opening on Saturday from 2 – 10 PM.

Gravity as in high gravity beers.  Cheers to that!  On Saturday, they’ll be pouring: Belgian Wit, Belgian Abbey, Belgian Blonde, Double IPA and Imperial Stout.

Stop by and visit the tasting room and enjoy a little bubble hockey or ping pong.  The weather should be cooperating if you want to hang out in the beer garden and enjoy a little horseshoe action. Gravity Brewing is located at: 1150 Pine St. Unit B, Louisville, CO 80027.  303-544-0746.

Don’t forget about our friends on the radio.  Turk and The Gubna from the Colorado Craft Beer Show will be at New Belgium’s Tour de Fat over at City Park in Denver.

Grab your bike and a costume and head over for the parade of bikes and beer.  Can’t make it out? Tune into the show on AM 760 at noon and listen in live.

There you have it!  Another beer-packed weekend is waiting for you.  Go get it!

Cheers!
